There ended up being like 35 people total during the course of the morning, all bristling with optics and sporting various styles of sunhats.

Not everyone was here to look for the kite... it's dove-hunting season. The things he's carrying aren't dead doves, they're plastic decoys all strung up on a string like a chile ristra.

Oh fanfare oh pandemonium - a swallow-tailed kite has been found - ! (Sorry no photo of the bird itself... I definitely don't have the camera muscle for that, since it's a relatively small bird and it was pretty far up.)
* Twitch (verb): to drop everything and go to sometimes great lengths to see a rare bird.
* Twitch (noun): the massive party that results from everyone in a 100-mile radius showing up simultaneously to twitch said bird.
Did you just give us 'the bird'? ;) Next time it might be more interesting to do a series of the silly hats birders wear. Right up there with old Southern women.
+Twitch+ (noun
device used to restrain horses. Made of stick-like handle or metal ring with loop of chain or rope which is wrapped around the upper lip. May also be applied to non-birdwatchers to keep them compliant while they are shown all things bird related.
