These are vegetable that can't afford to live in California any more.

Oh, sort of a reverse "Grapes of Wrath" deal, hobo-ing back across to the East?

The vegetables are political refugees, seeking asylum.

I like California too, but this is offending my newly acquired sense of fanatical locavorism.

And so it should. And that reminds me: I thought you might like some of the ideas here http://self-help-housing.org/ - reusing buildings for sustainable, community owned housing.

yeah, I hafta agree with you.Whole Paycheck, of all places, is guilty of this as well. Nevermind, this weekend you can hit the Farmer's market again (yours or mine).

MizB - weirdly our Silver Spring WhoFoo is a little better - they have a whole section set aside for local stuff in the summer. And the other (Silver Spring) branch of the co-op also marks produce as local, and had lots of stuff like lettuce and such the other day. So I was particularly exasperated that the Takoma Park branch, ostensibly the 'crunchiest' of the three, would be so lame. Maybe it was just a fluke that day. Oooh megs, that link looks right up my sustainable, community-owned alley - thanks!

LOl @ JenPat. It can be frustrating, knowing that there are local products grown there but unaccessable in the grocery store.

I don't understand where our local produce goes! Grr. It's definitely frustrating when local grocers aren't selling local produce mid-summer!
