In the butterfly garden

2009.07.11
A Great Eggfly on my handbag. I'm all decked out in plastic outdoorsy gear.

Whoa!!!11! A butterfly perching on a moth! I've got to get a photo of that.

A little DOF action for y'all.

Not sure why they decided to call this butterfly a Postman, but ok.

A Costa Rica Clearwing butterfly. Freaking cool!!!! Clear.

This morning we went to the Brookside Gardens butterfly garden in Wheaton. It's a greenhouse with lots of butterfly food plants and hundreds and hundreds of mostly tropical butterflies fluttering around. It's unearthly and beautiful. I had like 10 land on me, which was definitely a personal best; I've concluded that they like Aveda hair gel.

The other great thing that happened was that I think I've finally figured out how to work the macro button on my camera. O happy day.

Then after that to Woodlands, which I think is the best Indian restaurant in town, hands down. Sorry no food porn, kiddies... I took a couple shots and they were all blurry and unappetizing. I had idlis, rasam, turnip poriyal (the highlight), several chutneys, and payasam. Oh, and a rare plausible cup of masala chai.

All annotated, of course.

Oweena Based on your description of the Disturbed Tigerwing he seems most likely to be the serial killer of the butterfly world.

Quailia Great shots, love the Clearwing.

I think the Postman is called that because they read my bad handwriting with their antennae to decipher foreign addresses. Actually their full name is "Postman's Vitally Important Assistant Moth" but that's quite long and they're quite small. Either that or the letterbox shaped mark on its wing.
Quailia · 2009-07-11: 16:34
Liiisa lol.. thanks you all.

Yes, Q (she said, nodding supportively). In what way is that shaped like a letterbox? Or do you mean the yellow thingie is like a slot? But then wouldn't you call it a postbox? I mean, you don't feed mail to the postman through a slot.

whortleberry They're all rather gorgeous, aren't they?
whortleberry · 2009-07-11: 21:04
bouds Maybe that butterfly always rings twice.

I'm learning to appreciate butterflies. I saw some very cool butterlies in both Costa Rica and the Amazon.

megaera In Europe, Lisa, we have letterboxes in our doors; ie, a slot, covered with a flap, through which the postman posts the letters. So, actually, the postman feeds post to homeowners through a slot just like that. And, er, maybe, just maybe, that butterfly was named by a European?
megaera · 2009-07-12: 03:50
phona Maybe you've got it the wrong way round. Maybe they named postmen after the butterfly because they have red and black uniforms.

MelanieO Beautiful shots!

DutchCookie love those places where you can be a landing strip for gorgeous butterflies!
DutchCookie · 2009-07-12: 04:35
Liiisa I can deal with the slot idea - we have slots in some of our doors here, too. But THERE IS NO SLOT IN A POSTMAN.

But anyway, thanks!

thisismizb Oh wow- didn't realize you went to Brookside! My friend works there and lives on the property. I can always get free tickets.... next time I guess.
Nice bug shots, hon.

Tulpje I love butterflies, I HATE moths (we have so many in the new place!)
Tulpje · 2009-07-13: 02:33
Liiisa I sure hope you don't have moths that size in your place, Tulpje! It was the size of a Yorkshire Terrier.

Thanks you guyz..
